A couple of weekends ago I visited Arts On Main for a little bit of a Sunday market. Johannesburg doesn’t have many of these things, so Arts On Main is a treasure to the market loving folk like me. I decided to go with a casual vibe in the pretty Forever New dress, Saints and Summer flats and my favorite hat. The weather was playing along, and Steve and I enjoyed a lovely lunch at “Eat Your Heart Out” before heading inside the market and admiring all the pretty arts and crafts and food. We shared a delicious pistachio and mango gelato, and I loved seeing the local fashion being sold on the streets.

I decided to take the photos next to this wall that is covered in “Before I Die I want To…” sentences, where people of Johannesburg can fill their own answers in with chalk. What do you want to do before you die? Are you really living your life? Those are the questions I asked myself, some of which I am often afraid to face. At almost 25, I am expected to have life all figured out by now, but in reality I feel like I know nothing. I don’t know what work I am going to do, I don’t know when I am going to get married or have kids, or do I even want kids? Life goes by oh so very quickly, and I felt like last year flew by in no time, and I achieved very little. So I didn’t know what I wanted to add to the “Before I Die I Want To” wall, because I didn’t have an answer.
The funny thing is that when I visited that wall back in 2012, I had my answer and I wrote it down. Back then I was still at varsity and was thinking about starting a fashion blog, so I wrote that before I die I want to become a fashion star( I know, I know but I am being honest here). Now I don’t know if that’s what I want anymore. I’m not gonna say that before I die I want to be happy, because I think being happy 100% of the time is unrealistic and sets you up for failure. Many people had their answers-just look behind me on the wall. They want to become a wife, a CA, travel the globe and smoke a joint(hey each to their own I guess).
So when I went home after visiting Arts On Main I thought about what I want to do before I die, and I gave myself some answers. I might not get to do all of it, because we don’t know when our time is up, but I am sure as hell going to try this year. This year I want to finish my studies. I want to spend more time with my loved ones. I want to be healthy and at a happy space with my body. I want to travel to Europe in June and see another part of the world in December. I want everyday to try my best at whatever I do, and hope I succeed.

So then there is your 1st Before I Die answer: “set new goals and get my life back on track”
And don’t be so hard on yourself. Your life is rarely what you planned it to be at 25. By 30 it’s so different and infinitely better than you’d planned.
Take it from an old lady like me! 😉
