I do love a good palette, in fact I love palettes so much I have a whole draw full of them! I can never walk past a palette wall at the shops and I love to expand my ever-growing collection. I first acquired a Maybelline eye shadow palette last year when I was travelling- it was “The Nudes” palette which I thought would be a good dupe for the Naked Palette (which I didn’t have at that stage) and I knew that we weren’t going to get it in South Africa. I ended up really liking it, so when I heard that Maybelline will be bringing in the “Rock Nudes” palette into South Africa I was excited! Maybelline kindly send me one to try out as well as give one away to you guys! The palette is a “once-off” in South Africa, meaning that when it sells out, it sells out, so get it while its hot!
“The Rock Nudes” palette is a selection of heavy metal colours that deliver a rock-n-roll edge. The palette consists of 12 colours ranging from a matte white down to a charcoal black. I wouldn’t call this a nude palette per se- the colours are more punchy and on the darker side of the spectrum. I also did find that the lighter shades did not lift very well, however the darker shades are super pigmented and rich. I created a light, almost “every-day” smoky eye that you can easily follow along below with the palette to show you how the shades play up in real life.
Also as a side-note, the palette has a little guide at the back on how to use the colours in duos, trios and quads. It’s always great to get a little help because I always get confused with the darker shades and what a better colour is to go into the crease. Also I am a little petrified of doing smoky eyes, as I wear brown and neutrals day to day. So just go along with me in this attempt.
Let’s start all fresh faced and bushy tailed 🙂
Always remember to prime your eyes! Especially because the lighter shades don’t lift as nicely, it helps when the eye is already primed.
To start off I went in with the light grey shade all over my lower lid, and the light beige shade all over the upper lid. I didn’t use the brush allocated in the palate, but my own, I just used this one to indicate here for ease of use 🙂
Then, using the glittery grey colour, which is super pigmented, I made a V –shape on the outer corner of my eye. It’s a little scary because it takes time to blend, but make an outline and blend, blend, blend.
Sometimes I also mix a transition colour such as the white one to blend.
Aaannd after 5 hours I finally blended it and here we are. Getting there right?
Then using the white shade, go over your lower lid and highlight in your tear duct. Using the matte brown go into your tight line with it.
Re-blend where needed with the white shade, I have to do it a few times 🙂
My favourite part- eyeliner and mascara! I love the Maybelline Lash Drama mascara and Master Ink eyeliner.
Because my eyes are quite heavy, I went for a nude lip using the new Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge lipstick in “Suspense”. Gorg!
And here is the finished look! I quite like it, but I am still getting used to a smoky eye. Maybe next time I will try something a little heavier?
And to win the palette for yourself comment on this post with your details! I will randomly draw a winner next week Friday(the 2nd). Only open to residents of South Africa and winner has to contact me within 7 days.

This is the best smoky-eye tutorial I’ve seen. I get very nervous about smoky eyes so I’ve never tried it but I definitely will now.
