On Tuesday I was invited to have a personal shopping experience at a little store called Luminance. Oh you know that little store that sells only theeee most amazing designer duds? Yes that one. For your average Tuesday afternoon, I arrived at the store (located at Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre) and was utterly spoilt by the Luminance team. I still can’t get over my experience and keep telling everyone that I was queen for a day (or at least a couple of hours).
Luminance opened its doors last year July and is the brain child of Khanyi Dhlomo, the founder of Ndalo Luxury Ventures. The store is set in an impressive 700 square meters of space and their motto is “Live Life Beautifully”. A visit to the shop is an experience like no other, and I went to visit them for the first time last year, shortly after the store opened. Sure, I can’t yet afford most of the items in the store, but the gorgeous architecture, the beautiful clothes and of course, the designer shoes are enough of a reason to lure anyone in. It is one of the most beautiful stores I have ever seen, and a first for South Africa, that’s for sure.
I started off my experience by getting beautified with Bobbi Brown and their talented make-up artist, Heather. She touched up my make-up and gave me a very fresh, natural look which I loved. I have only recently started venturing into the world of Bobbi Brown, and I love it more and more every time! After my make-over, the Luminance personal shopper consultant, James, took me around the store. Honestly, I can spend hours in there just looking and admiring all of the stock.

Everything in Luminance is arranged according to a designer roaster- what’s in and what’s new. In the shoe department I had my eyes on the blue Manolo Blahniks- the Hangisi made famous by Mr.Big and Carrie in the “Sex And The City” movie. Other shoe favourites of mine were the L.K Bennett pumps- the pair that the Duchess Of Cambridge loves and wears all the time. We might not get to be married to Prince William and be a Duchess, but hey we can all have her gorgeous style and L.K Bennett shoes!
On the clothing side, I really loved the Kate Spade rack. I love how contemporary and classic her designs are, but with a modern twist. Luminance has recently brought in two iconic brands- J.Brand jeans and Spanx underwear. All of the celebrities swear by Spanx, and it is something I definitely would like to own one day.
I died of cuteness over at the baby section- look at this Chloe bathrobe! I know that the baby would grow out of it in like a day, but how cute is it? And this little fur gilet- cuteness overload!
Luminance also has a coffee shop which is filled with fashion books and designer tea. I’ve had tea at Luminance before, and let me just tell you that besides being delicious it is also served on Kate Spade china. Who needs some luxury in their life?
Onto my actual personal shopping experience, James picked out a collection of resort wear for me to try on. How it works, is that when you book your personal shopping consultation, the Luminance team drives over to your house to pick you up and drive you to the store. You tell them what kind of look you are searching for- a “Mother of the Bride” look? A “Big Corporate Dinner” look? You let them know, and by the time you get to the store, there will be a selection of their finest garments for you to choose from. You can also bring in some items that you already currently have in your wardrobe so they can help you work it in with your new purchases.
James and I had a little photo shoot while I tried on the most gorgeous Matthew Williamson dress. The moment I put it on, I felt like Carrie in “Sex And The City” (yes I am obsessed with the show). I could already see myself on a resort in Ibiza in this outfit. Sigh, oh the life! The personal shopping room is spacious and quite grand, so you have total privacy in it. You can enjoy a light lunch and a cappuccino while trying on your garments, and then process the payment right in the room. If it sounds like heaven, that’s because it is.The Luminance stuff was so attentive to me and I didn’t want to leave after my time was up- I wanted to play more dress up and try on every Balenciaga shoe in the store!

The cost of the personal shopping experience is R800. Sure, it might seem pricey but when you are getting treated like a queen, it is so worth it. I am totally coming back when I have my fashion (or maths?) empire up and running. Luminance, hold on, I’m coming back after those Manolos!
Thank you so much to Zebra Square and Luminance for hosting me on the day!
