I love discovering cool things to do in Joburg, because often I don’t explore my own city enough! You’ll often find me complaining about how little there is to do in Joburg, and how Cape Town is so much cooler, but the truth is, I don’t make nearly enough time to explore the city that I live in. With that in mind, I promised myself that every weekend I will try to find a little gem in Joburg to explore, and last week I started this quest with a visit to the Crabtree&Evelyn Tea Room in Design Quarter! Did you know it was there, because I didn’t, but now that I do, I will definitely be a frequent visitor!
The Tea Room at Design Quarter lends credence to Crabtree&Evelyns heritage. It brings to life one of the pillars of the Crabtree&Evelyn brand- the fine tradition of Afternoon Tea! I am a huge lover of tea(anytime really, not just in the afternoon ;)) and I enjoy having the full on feast when it comes to the Afternoon Tea- mini sandwiches, scones with jam, tarts and all sorts of cakes! We were treated to sweet and savory bites for our visit and it was simply delicious- I had tea sandwiches (mint and cucumber and deviled eggs flavored) and freshly baked cheesecake, all very yummy and freshly prepared. When we walked into Crabtree&Evelyn that morning all I could smell was freshly baked scones, so I knew I was not going to be able to resist a sweet treat that day!
Luckily, you can also take some of this delicious food home, as I found out recently! Crabtree&Evelyn also have a range of Fine Foods that are stocked online and in their stores, so you can indulge from the comfort of your own bed while watching Netflix(or was that just me?:)). The Fine Foods Collection includes delicacies like their biscuits that are traditionally baked for Crabtree&Evelyn by a Scottish family who have been in the biscuit business for more than 100 years! You can choose from divine flavors like Lemon&White Chocolate, Strawberry&Clotted Cream, Rasberry&White Chocolate and a few others! I got the Toffee&Pecan Biscuits and I am waiting for lent to be over so I can indulge in them. They also all come in these beautiful tins that are perfect for gifting.
Other treats in the Fine Foods range include Toffees, Fudge, Shortbread Fingers, Gumdrops and yummy Preserves. The preserves are slowly hand cooked in the classic manner in the heart of the Somerset countryside. The range has been upgraded to offer British classics with a modern twist. These preserves go nicely with pancakes, toast, crumpets and of course scones. I got the Wild Blueberry Preserve that I have been indulging in on my morning toast, and other flavors include Tarrocco Orange, Citrus Curd and Strawberry&Vanilla.
The high tea experience at the Crabtree&Evelyn tearoom is R250, which is very reasonable as far as high teas go(trust me, I’ve been to a few!) You can also hire out the whole room for an occasion, or just stop by for a casual lunch on the weekend. Check out the full menu here, and I hope you make a visit to this divine little gem of Jozi soon!
